The show has raked in a total of $1.21 billion since it opened in 1997, according to The Broadway League, the national trade association for Broadway So far in 2015,The Lion King has grossed $88.3 million. “The Lion King” is the third-longest running show on Broadway and will mark its 18th anniversary Friday. The online lottery sells a limited number of tickets and the number of winners vary by show. “When we’ve tried a student rush in the past, some ticket brokers purchased the tickets at the rush price and resold them for much more than their face value,” said Andrew Flatt, senior vice president, marketing and sales, at Disney Theatrical Productions. Lion King has in the past tried to offer lower-cost tickets through in-person student rush offerings, but it ran into issues with ticket scalpers. Other Broadway shows, and the app TodayTix, have launched digital lotteries as a way to reach a broader audience and improve convenience. “The Lion King” has the fourth-highest average paid admission on the Great White Way, at $130.40, according to The Wall Street Journal.
